Managerial Third Party Dispute Resolution: An
Overview and Introduction to the Special Issue
James B. Dworkin1
In this article I review each of the five articles included in the special issue on
managerial third party dispute resolution. This review is followed by a brief listing of
the goals for this special issue and three suggestions for future research. These
suggestions include the need for more focus on the nonunion sector, a call for
interdisciplinary research, and a plea for research concentrating on managerial third
party dispute resolution in other cultures.
KEY WORDS: third party dispute resolution; managers; rights; political model; self efficacy; mediation;
intervention strategy, informal third parties.
INTRODUCTION
In this brief introductory piece I would like to accomplish two goals. First, I
will summarize the highlights of the five articles in this special issue, paying par-
ticular attention to each article's unique contribution to the field of managerial
third party dispute resolution. Second, I will make a few comments on the goals
for this special issue and where research is likely to take us in the years to come.
For the most part, the articles that follow speak for themselves as to the state of
the art in the field of research and theory on managerial third party dispute reso-
lution. As these authors have cited well over 150 references from a variety of dis-
ciplines and literatures, I will not burden the reader with duplicate citations in this
introduction to the special issue.
