LEGAL HERO: CHIEF JUDGE JOHN MICHAEL GUIDRY

Louisiana Supreme Court ChiefJustice
John L. Weimer, along with the associate
justices, are pausing to celebrate and
give honor to Black History Month.
Aformer educator who served on the
Board of the Louisiana Centerfor Law
and Civic Education, ChiefJustice
Weimer is dedicated to promoting uni-
versal awareness and understanding of
the justice system.


This is thefirst offour special Black
History Month issues of DeNovo, the
newsletter of the Law Library ofLoui-
siana, that will be distributed statewide
by the Louisiana Supreme Court. Each
issue willfeature Louisiana legal heroes
of the past and present. This week's
honoree is the first African American to
serve as ChiefJudge ofLouisiana' First
Circuit CourtofAppeal, ChiefJudge
John Michael Guidry.


C hief   Judge  John Michael
Guidry   is the 15th Chief
Judge  of the Louisiana  First
Circuit Court  of Appeal  and
its first African American
Chief  Judge. Sixteen parish-
es comprise  the jurisdiction
of the First Circuit Court
of Appeal,  including Ascen-
sion, Assumption,   East and
West  Baton  Rouge,  East
and  West  Feliciana, Iber-
ville, Lafourche, Livingston,
Pointe  Coupee,  St. Helena,
St. Mary,  St. Tammany,
Tangipahoa,   Terrebonne,
and  Washington   Parishes.


Chief  Judge  Guidry  was
born  in 1962  in Baton
Rouge,  Louisiana.  He

State University in 1983.
He  graduated  cum  laude


from  Southern  University
Law  Center  in 1987. While
