LEVINSON Federal Bureau of Prisons I am not sure how close an account or concept of the following type meets the expectations of both readers and editors. Nevertheless, it does provide a structure which may help clarify any alien issues raised in this essay. Researchers of the first kind are found in academia. They epitomize the characteristics ascribed to searchers for truth, testers of hypotheses, and developers of theories. As seekers of knowledge for its own sake, they are free (provided sufficient grant money is available) to search for unifying laws and prin- ciples; that is, these are the basic researchers.
