They offer state-of-the-art summaries of important areas; they focus a spotlight on previously overlooked topics; they highlight cutting edge developments; they provide integration and/or controversy by juxtaposing several related articles; and, one hopes, they spur further research, conceptualization, and application. (They also provide some welcomed breathing space for the anxious journal editor, ever fearful of a dearth of acceptable manuscripts through the regular submission process.) The assessment and treatment of sex offenders was a logical and obvious choice for the first special issue commissioned by the present editor. The subject matter is clearly of vital concern and interest to correctional personnel, researchers, and the general public alike, and one where myth and misconception often hold sway. Fortunately, as demonstrated by the articles that follow, it is also an area where exciting and promising developments are occurring. Robert Prentky, known for his and Raymond Knight's seminal work on the classification of sex offenders, has assembled a veritable Who's Who of scholars in the field. Here, these researchers and theorists present their latest conceptualizations and their most recent data. In format, the articles range from narrative reviews and critiques to meta-analyses to program descriptions to empirical studies. In content, they address a broad range of crucial aspects of the assessment and treatment process, offering innovative assessment instruments and strategies and encouraging treatment approaches and provocative thought on the psychological processes leading to sexual offending. To Robert Prentky and the contributing authors I am grateful for a most solid and stimulating special issue. As you read these articles, I trust you will share my appreciation and enthusiasm. -David S.
