handle is hein.journals/crmjusbhv18 and id is 1 raw text is: EDITOR'S PREFACE Some 15 years ago, I attended a Southeastern Psychological Asso- ciation convention and became acquainted with the work of Joel Milner. Then, he was one of the few voices both speaking out about child abuse and collecting empirical data. His psychometric scales were the only ones I knew of that addressed the issue of child abuse, and did so in a psychometrically careful and valid fashion. I followed his work over the years and, when I began editing this journal, I called on him a few times to referee articles. His reviews were perspicacious. We began to discuss the field, and I thought Criminal Justice and Behavior was due for a special issue on the topic of child abuse. Our society began to see this pervasive, serious problem as a symptom of moral decay and a threat to its future. Naturally, I asked Dr. Milner to edit the special issue. He pointed out to me that when we speak generically about child abuse, we fail to distinguish different phenom- ena; physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect of children. Each merits attention in their own right. Thus this issue addresses physical child abuse, and will be followed next year by one on sexual child abuse. Dr. Milner has assembled a remarkable panel of experts to consider the various areas of physical child abuse. The areas range from methodolocal issues when conducting or reading studies in this area, to models of abuse, to issues in assessing perpetrators, to victim damage, and to treatment issues. It is our hope that this issue helps researchers and professionals take stock of the field, and guides the practice and research efforts for the coming decade.
