This need gave rise to the concept of trademarks, which essentially affords recognition and identification protection to brands. It is difficult to identify Nike without its Swoosh logo and Macintosh without the Apple logo. Contrary to the general belief, it is worth mentioning that laws surrounding trademarks and intel ectual property did not surface with the millennials. It is, in fact, the opposite! The idea and requirement to establish a unique mark for one's goods or services were introduced by the early Roman Empire, which recognized and valued the importance of trademarks. The Roman legal system recognized distinct marks that were assigned to each sword manufactured in the kingdom depending on the individual style of the bladesmith or swordsmith making it. Centuries later, intellectual property recognition and the need to safeguard it has become pivotal in the ever-changing dynamics of business and there is a constant demand to improve and upgrade the laws therefor.
