ABSTRACT. Based on an in-depth survey of the literature, the purpose of the paper
is to explore whether self-driving cars can lead to sustainability. Using and replica-
ting data from AUDI AG, AUVSI, Black & Veatch, Capgemini, CivicScience,
Ipsos, J.D. Power, and Perkins Coie, I performed analyses and made estimates
regarding autonomous smart sensors, perception and planning, and data processing
efficiency. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.
Keywords: self-driving; car; sustainability; sensor; perception; algorithm

1. Introduction

Self-driving vehicles monitored by artificial intelligence are progressively
being assimilated in the transport portfolio of urban areas, with relevant
consequences for the configuration and sustainability of the built setting.
(Cugurullo et al., 2020) Innovative transport technologies integrate cutting
edge sensors and groundbreaking computational networks to process the
gathered data. (Cunneen et al., 2020) The adoption of autonomous vehicles
should improve data-driven smart sustainable mobility and land use approaches.
(Noguds et al., 2020) An interconnected structure of shared, self-driving
electric vehicles may facilitate sustainable, zero-emission urban mobility
encompassing a drastically diminished fleet size, thus leading to a superior
resource use and meeting service level demands. (Dlugosch et al., 2020)
