GENERATIONAL SOCIAL
MOBILITY AND
POLITICAL ORIENTATION

T he dominant role of the family in structuring the political party
loyalties of offspring through early political socialization has been
well established in recent years. But, in addition, the influence of a voter's
social-class position on his choice of political party has been well
documented by empirical evidence, and systematic studies have been made
of the relative strength of social class in determining political behavior in a
number of nations.
In view of the findings produced by these two schools of research, the
problem posed for analysts of voting behavior by those electors who shift
from one social class in childhood to another in adult life is an extremely
interesting one. The influences of the early socialization of the child into
the political values of his parents' social class will then be in conflict with
the influences of the different social class into which the offspring has
risen or fallen through occupational mobility.
The outcome of the interaction of these two influences for the pattern
of political party choice of the socially mobile is difficult to anticipate,
