Editor's Note
When I took on the responsibility of editing this journal in April
1974, 1 promised myself not to stay on longer than four years. Thus,
about a year ago I started to encourage Betsy Schmidt (then Executive
Editor of journals at Sage Publications) to begin searching for a replace-
ment for me. Shortly after I announced my forthcoming resignation,
two of my colleagues at Northwestern, Ted Robert Gurr and Ronald
J. Herring, began to discuss with me a possible joint editorship of the
journal, still including myself. I am happy to announce that Professors
Gurr, Herring, and I will collectively edit the journal for the next three
years. This arrangement has some decided advantages in addition to the
obvious one of continuity provided by my remaining as one of the
editors. We three are also situated differently in the discipline, each
has different contacts, and each is likely to bring different critical
perspectives to bear on the evaluation of manuscripts. Similarly,
we all continue to strive to make COMPARATIVE POLITICAL
STUDIES a journal where a diversity of intellectual concerns is
represented.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the
Editorial Board and Panel of Consultants for their efforts during the
last four years. Not only did they provide me with intelligent reviews
of manuscripts sent to them, but they also kept me abreast of important
academic currents of which I was unaware, thus putting me in touch
with promising research articles. Most of the members of the Editorial
Board have occupied their positions since before I became editor and
they have served longer than one should ask. We will therefore be
naming a new Editorial Board and Panel of Consultants shortly.
On behalf of my new editorial colleagues, I want to emphasize that
the next three years will attempt to build on and improve the thrusts
we have pursued in the last four years: maintenance of high-quality
research contributions, expanding diversity of these contributions, and
an increase of exchanges of ideas, particularly in the format of symposia
and special issues. We look forward to your help and suggestions.
