Increases for Fifth
Consecutive Year
Total J.D. Enrollment in the 176 ABA-
approved law schools has increased to
129,580 students, an increase of 1.8% over
1991's total. This is the fifth year in a row that
total J.D. enrollment has increased. In addition
total overall enrollment (includes J.D., Post-J.D.,
and Other students) is up by 2.1% to 135,157
students.
The number of women entering law school was
up slightly over last year. First year enrollment of
women increased 1%, from 18,592 in 1990 to
18,773 in 1991. Women represent 43% of the first
year class, up from 42% last year. Total J.D.
enrollment of women increased as well, from
54,097 to 55,110, but remained the same percentage
(42.5%) of total J.D. enrollment. The total number
of women enrolled grew to 57,005, or 42.2% of
total overall enrollment. This figure is higher than
last year's figure of 55,818 by 2%.
Minority J.D. enrollment also increased this year.
A total of 19,410 minority students enrolled in J.D.
programs in 1991. This represents a 12% increase
over 1990's total of 17,330. First year minority
enrollment increased by 9%, from 6,993 to 7,575.
Minorities constituted 15% of total J.D. students
in 1991, compared to 13.6% in 1990. In 1991 18%
of first year law students were minorities, an
increase over 1990's 15.7%.

Made Available
he Office of the Consultant is pleased to
make available to interested persons an index
of studies, surveys and other publications
produced since 1984. A few of the topics covered
by studies on the index include professional respon-
sibility, promotion and tenure policies, legal writ-
ing, research institutes, law school curricula, law
buildings, readmission policies, professional skills
teachers, foreign summer program enrollments and
pro bono programs.
The list may be obtained free of charge by writing
to the Office of the Consultant, American Bar
Association, 550 West North Street, Indianapolis,
Indiana 46260. Studies may be ordered for $2
apiece to cover postage and handling. Suggestions
of topics for future research studies are always
welcome.
