24 Bull. Com. L. League Am. 1 (1919)

handle is hein.journals/clla24 and id is 1 raw text is: President's Foreword
Now for the C. L. L. A. and for an Organization
of 100% Efficiency
During the past year and a half the Red Cross and Liberty
Loan campaigns have made popular the term 100 percent, as
applied to numbers of members and subscriptions in families and
organizations, as a demonstration of the efficiency of united patri-
otism. Those who reached that goal were proud to publicly display
the certificate of their achievement.
So. in tiie League, should members strive to make their organiza-
tion 100 percent efficient, not merely for sentimental reasons as
in the Red Cross and Liberty Loan drives, but because their own
welfare. demands such efficiency if they are to receive the full measure
of prqtection which a 100 percent efficient organization alone can
give them,
The Cuimercial Law League of America differs from most
professional o;. f!,zations in that it stands not only for high pro-
4esional ideals, but, in addition, seeks to make those ideals attain-
able by its unremitting efforts for the material welfare of its members.
The founders of the League built better than they knew when they established
an organization with purposes both practical and idealistic. Students of social
problems agree that preaching ideals to hungry stomachs is a vain task. The
League intends to make its ideals practicable by securing a living wage to the
practitioners of the law and the realization of professional standards.
The League's value to its memhv'r. is in proportion to what they put into
it. No matter how intelligently they plan and zealously 'execute, the President,
Secretary and Executive Committee by themselves -can produce only a meager
part of what'might be accomplished if they were supported by the united effort
of all the members.
The League belongs to its members. No national organization is more
democratic. The members can make it what they will and the nation-wide
drive for new members set for April 16th, 1919, gives them the opportunity by
exercising a little effort on the part of each to double the membership and increase
ten-fold the League's prestige and its effectiveness for service. The question
is, will you, the members, Seize this opportunity, in your own interest, as a
measure of insurance, so to speak, to make the League a more powerful instru-
ment for the defense of the higher schedule of fees and for the protection of the
individual lawyer harrassed by unfair competition? I know y ou will, and in
doing so you will derive the 'reward and the satisfaction of having served an
organization which has done so much for you, as well as from the increased
income which will come from the permanence of the new rates and the enforce-
ment of League ideals.
