handle is hein.journals/cjscj21 and id is 1 raw text is: Criminal Justice Studies; Vol. 21, No. 1, March 2008, 1 EDITORIAL From the Editor's desk The paper by Revital Sela-Shayovitz, 'Young Drivers' Perceptions of Peer Pressure, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Drugs, and Involvement in Road Accidents,' is a study that deals with the relationship between young drivers' perceptions of the peer pressure experienced from passengers in the car and their subsequent driving patterns. The research done for this paper is expected to enhance a better perception of driving patterns among young drivers, while bring- ing forth a new understanding on the involvement of young drivers and traffic accidents. Jessica Henry's paper on 'Closing the Legal Services Gap in Prisoner Reentry Programs' discusses how those individuals who are incarcerated face tremendous legal barriers as they begin to reenter society. They face legal barriers which include gaining public housing and public assis- tance, as well as prohibitions against those jobs that require licenses as well as other employment prohibitions. 'Predictors of Self-Reported Prison Misconduct,' by Attapol Kuanliang and Jon Sorensen, studies those incoming prisoners who are most likely to commit disciplinary infractions. Using data from the 1997 Survey of Inmate in State and Federal Correctional Facilities they look at factors such as mental problems, prior drug involvement, history of incarceration, and past phys- ical abuse, among others. Matt DeLisi, Andy Hochstetler, Aaron M. Scherer, Aaron Purhmann, and Mark T. Berg in their paper, 'The Starkweather Syndrome: Exploring Criminal History Antecedents of Homicidal Crime Sprees,' talk about how little is known about criminal backgrounds of offenders who commit homicidal crime sprees. The timeframe of spree killing has been described as short or long duration that fits somewhere between mass killings and serial killing. 'Criterion Validity of Self-Reported Drug Use among Alaska Native and Non-Native Arrestees in Anchorage, Alaska,' by Darryl S. Wood, examines Alaska Natives culturally based propensity toward truth-telling. Woods's hypothesis was that there exists the query as to whether there would be differences between self-reported drug use and urinalysis results and whether the latter would be smaller for Alaska Natives than for non-Natives. The study demonstrated that both Alaska Natives and non-Natives were candid about their drug use. Brian F. Kingshott, Frank Hughes, Kristine Mullendore, and Johan Prinsloo, in their paper, 'A Leadership Approach to Criminal Justice Education: Developing Tomorrow's Decision Makers,' examine how justice delivery in criminal justice systems depends on the quality of the decisions of its members. What is needed for criminal justice educators is to build their students into persons who are capable of making these decisions. 'The Jail as a Dumping Ground: The Incidental Incarceration of Mentally Ill Individuals' by Gregg W. Etter Sr., Michael L. Birzer, and Judy Fields describes for us how the deinstitutional- ization of the mentally ill has had the unintended consequences of increasing the number of persons with mental illnesses who are incarcerated in county jails. What they hypothesized was whether these incarcerated mentally ill individuals charged with relatively minor crimes were a result of their mental illnesses.
