handle is hein.journals/cjpr1 and id is 1 raw text is: FOUNDERS' LETTER In the fall of 1984, the idea for this journal was developed in discus- sions engaged in by the two of us. An examination of the field as well as numerous discussions with our colleagues both in the Department of Criminology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania as well as at other institutions provided information that supported our original beliefs of the need for this journal. After close scrutiny of possible funding sources, it became apparent that the best source existed right at our own university. The Imprint Series, a funding organization of Indiana University of Pennsylvania was developed originally to underwrite the establishment of new, quality, refereed journals that were designed to meet an identified need. A funding application was prepared by Robert Mutchnick, on behalf of the Department of Criminology, and submitted to the Im- print Series Committee for funding. A five year decreasing award in the amount of $50,000 was made. At the end of the five year period the journal was charged with being self sufficient. The Criminal Justice Policy Review, is specifically designed to pro- vide a forum for articles, essays, research notes and book reviews that address the issues of criminal justice policy. Periodically, the CJPR will publish interviews with identified experts from both the academic and practical fields of the discipline. These interviews will represent alternatives to the traditional scholarly research that will be the focus of the journal. We thank the members of the faculty of the Department of Criminol- ogy for their support and encouragement as well as the Dean of the Graduate School and Research, who chairs the Imprint Series Com- mittee, and all the members of the criminal justice/criminology com- munity who helped us take an idea and mold it into the product you have before you.
