This issue includes three articles that explore the effectiveness of restorative justice processes through quantitative and qualitative analyses. William Bradshaw, David Roseborough, and Mark S. Umbreit present a meta- analysis of fifteen studies that examined the impact of restorative justice on the recidivism of juvenile offenders. The previous research on this relation- ship has documented an impressive effectiveness, but this meta-analysis suggests further insights. These studies indicate that initially impressive impacts on recidivism lessen with time. The longer the period following involvement in victim offender mediation, the less the effect on recidivism. The meta-analysis also suggests that there are some notable methodological weaknesses in this body of research that should be rectified. Mark Umbreit and Rina Ritter introduce an application of a restorative justice dialogue process in a family context. This case study contributes to the restorative justice literature by presenting a restorative justice process-dialogue- that is less common than its better-known counterparts such as conferenc- ing or victim offender mediation. The case study involves application in a context of severe cultural conflict, with the offense involving an Arab offender and a Jewish victim. The authors discuss this context in terms of the difficulties of using restorative justice processes. Also, Susan J. Szmania uses a discourse analysis study to show how mediators use their opening statements in victim offender mediation. In the lead article of this issue, Laurence de Carlo describes the five-year public decision process used to resolve a conflict about the high-speed French train, the TGV Maditerrande. As she details in this case study, there were strong tensions between the regional and local interests and the larger national interests concerning this advance in transportation systems. After providing an explanation of French orientations to public interest, de Carlo explains the nature of the process and the challenges. Her analysis ?
