Longitudinal studies have identified developmental trajectories of antisocial
behaviour. They have also identified risk and protective factors that predict
the likelihood of crime and mental disorders. The current challenge is to
understand the mechanisms by which risk and protective factors and behav-
iours interact in causal processes leading to antisocial behaviour, crime and
mental disorders. It is equally important to understand the processes by which
antisocial behaviours are inhibited or extinguished. Understanding the mech-
anisms of transmission and change provides a foundation for prevention and
intervention efforts that seek to interrupt the causal sequences leading to anti-
social outcomes and mental disorders and that seek to promote processes of
positive social development.
The papers in this special issue seek to identify mechanisms of transmission
and change across the life cycle. They are based on presentations prepared for
a meeting of the Society for Life History Research in Psychopathology held in
Seattle in May 1998. Established over 30 years ago, the Society provides a
forum for multidisciplinary researchers who share a commitment to longitudi-
nal studies as a key method of developing understanding of the aetiology of
psychopathology and methods for preventing and reducing psychopathology.
The Seattle meeting focused explicitly on theories and mechanisms of trans-
mission and change. The next meeting of the Society will be held on 23-26
September 1999 on the island of Kauai, and is being organized by Deborah
Gorman-Smith and Patrick Tolan.
The Society's meetings are always at the cutting edge of knowledge. The
Seattle meeting was no exception. The world's most experienced longitudinal
researchers presented their most recent findings. State-of-the-art findings at
every stage of the life course were elucidated by longitudinal data. The papers
in this volume are a sampling of those prepared for the Seattle meeting. They
are a set that should be of particular interest to the readers of this journal. All
