First, it contains three papers presented at the annual conference of the British and Irish Group for the Study of Personality Disorders (BIGSPD), held in Cardiff in February 2004. As in a previous issue devoted to BIGSPD (Volume 14, No 1, 2004), these papers are a subset of the material presented at the conference that relate specifically to forensic psychology and psychiatry. BIGSPD is a thriving group whose activities are advertised on its website (http://www.bigspd.net). The second area of coverage in this issue is students' research. Over the past decade, there has been a large increase in the number of postgraduate courses in forensic psychology and psychiatry. Most of these courses require students to conduct a research project and it is our view that a great deal of good research by postgraduate students goes unpublished. About a year ago, we put out a call to courses for students with publishable research projects to come forward with their work. We believe this benefits the field by bringing to light research that might otherwise go unpublished and benefits junior researchers by familiarizing them with the process of publication. We begin the occasional publication of students' research in this issue with two excellent papers. Mary McMurran Editor 1
