CBMH greets 2000

The beginning of the new century sees Criminal Behaviour and Mental Health
into its tenth volume. We want to wish all our readers and our writers a happy
and fruitful New Year. It would probably have been impossible to have had a
journal with the interests of this one in the year 1900. Certainly, the knowl-
edge of the relationship between criminal behaviour and mental health and of
the management of mentally disordered offenders was rudimentary at that
time. Our knowledge and understanding has come a very long way since then
but even so it is quite clear that knowledge, skill, compassion and understand-
ing are still very limited in this field. Let us hope we can look forward in the
future to a rate of progress which is equal to that of the twentieth century. In
the United Kingdom the twentieth century has seen the birth of both forensic
psychiatry and criminology. We now also have sub-specialities of forensic psy-
chology and forensic nursing. Academic departments in both criminology and
forensic psychiatry are beginning to develop in a variety of major universities.

space to satisfy these needs.
Part of the reason for the rise in the quality of the papers has been the
quality, conscientiousness and good nature of our referees. We are fortunate
indeed that so many talented people have given so freely of their time, with-
out hope for any reward save the love of the discipline, and to enhance the
standards of the journal. We have always insisted on an anonymous refereeing
system, as do most peer-reviewed journals and we are not able to publish with
any frequency, in order to maintain that confidentiality, the names of the peo-
ple who have helped the journal and particularly the authors. We want to
take this opportunity therefore to list all those who have been so generous and
