Since August-i, 1979, it is instead the Northern Illinois University College of Law. Although most of us knew of the name change, many wondered what it implied for the future of the law school. Even more, we wondered how it has affected the library. The library has been affected in a number of ways, large and small, according to Stanley Horst, associate law librarian at the college. Mr. Horst spoke with us recently about the transfer of jurisdiction, as it is officially termed. Of course the first question is, Does this mean a move to DeKalb? The answer is yes, but not before the fall of 1982. The delay in moving to DeKalb does nothowever,mean that the law library will remain at its same location. Instead the library recently moved to a new location on the Glen Ellyn campus of Lewis University. The new quarters, which are more spacious than the old, will be leased from Lewis until the move to Northern's campus. Since the library greatly needed more space, this move represents a significant improvement. Another improvement following the change of parent institution is the sounder financial basis provided by affiliation with the state school. Long range plans for such things as the relationship of the law library and the university library, the staff structure of the law library and the physical space alloted to it are yet to be deter- mined. Mr. Horst explains that the entire transfer process, from proposal to consummation, was quite rapid and actually rather unexpected. In summary, the proposal for Northern Illinois University to acquire Lewis's law school was first presented to the Board of Regents (which governs Northern, Governor's State and Northeastern) early this year. The Board did not recommend the move. The Illinois Board of Higher Education, on the other hand, approved the proposal by a large margin, whereupon it went to the Illinois legislature. Both houses overwhelmingly approved the measure and, even more surprising to many, Governor Thompson signed it into law. Because of this combination of speed and uncertainty it is understandable that the details of how the College of Law will fit into its new home are not settled. contd. on page 3
