Summaries of the rest of the program and an additional bibliography follow it. AALL REORGANIZATION PROPOSALS -- A REBUTTAL by Jack Ellenberger 1. With nearly two thousand members, isn't it time to reorganize the Association? Not necessarily. There are at least two larger national library associations not within the cover of the ALA that exist with nothing more complicated than national committee and chapter structures: The Medical Library Association with 2,200 members and the Music Library Association with 1,900 members. Only the American Society for Information Science with 3,300 individual members and the Special Libraries Association with 9,000 members are now organized by subject divisions or something of the sort. Moreover, the AALL total of nearly 2,000 includes all classes of membership not just Active individual or designated Institutional members who are permitted to hold office (Bylaw Art. I, Sec. 2) and belong to committees (Bylaw Art. VI, Sec. 4). Where are the 2,000 active members who will benefit from this reorganization? Without an unlikely massive growth in membership it is difficult to see how this participation can be broadened. 2. But with annual dues income approaching $60,000, isn't this enough to support the proposed reorganization? Doubtful. Not very impressive compared with SLA's annual dues income of $200,000 supported by a membership of nearly 9,000 organized into subject Division interests similar to the ones some AALL members are now contemplating. The AALL Task Force has proposed as many as four Divisions by types of law libraries and possibly three more Divisions by subject. Added to that, we already have the Association interests and Chapter affiliations. 3. What would proposed reorganization cost? It's hard to tell, and we haven't so far learned much from the Task Force. But we do know that 80 percent of present dues income (about $51,000)
