Number 36 May. 1965

                                 C.A.L.L, MEETINGS

At our February 19 meeting at the Normandy House, Frank Lukes, Vice Presi-
dent, presided in the absence of President Powers. Our speaker, introduced by
Carroll Moreland, was Mr. Lee Silverstein, of the American Bar Foundation. He told
us of his work with the Foundation's Project for Defense of Indigent Persons
Accused of Crime. He said there is a preliminary report, made last summer, which
is available free from the American Bar Foundation. The final report (some 300 pages)
will be available approximately June 1. The relationship of this project to the
Poverty Program' was pointed up when he told us that 50-60% of all criminals are
indigent--and in some areas it runs as high as 907.

At the same meeting, Membership Chairman Agnes Christiansen introduced
Mrs. Lucile Lane, Administrative Secretary of AALL, who was a guest, and five new
members;

We greet the new members forthwith:

Mrs. Esther Landau, University of Chicago Law Library
Mr. Jerome Menezes, Northwestern University Law Library
Mrs. Marta M. Pryjma, Northwestern University Law Library
Miss Elelka Vajda, Northwestern University Law Library
Mrs. Helen L. Winters, University of Chicago Law Library

Our April 23 meeting, also held at Normandy House, was opened promptly
by President Powers. He announced that since there are no provisions in the by-
laws for making interim appointments of officers, the Executive Committee functioned
to appoint Miss Joyce Malden as Secretary-Treasurer to serve for the time following
Mrs. Barlow's resignation until the formal election of the new officers at the May
meeting. (We need someone with authority to sign checks.) Mr. Virgil Pederson
presented a motion that the by-laws be studied and amended to provide simple means
to make interim appointments to any vacant office (other than president) until proper
elections can be held.
The oral report of the Nominating Committee, Mr. Kurt Schwerin, Chairman,
was as follows:

                                Executive Committee

             President Mr. Frank Lukes
             Vice President Miss Elaine Teigler
             Secretary-Treasurer Miss Joyce Malden
                                          Mr. O1avi Maru
                                          Mr. Harley Stephenson

The membership will receive official notice of the election to be held May 21 at the
Chicago Bar Association.

Our guest speaker, introduced by Leon Liddell, was Mr. Milton Schroeder,
who is Editor-in-Chief of the Chicago University Law Review. He is a Weymouth
