CHICAGO LAW LIBRARY BULLETIN

                     CHICAGO ASSOCIATION OF LAW LIBRARIES

Number 29 May, 1960

NORTHWESTERN LAW SCHOOL COMPLETES OBSERVANCE OF CENTENNIAL YEAR

From May 11 to May 14, Northwestern University School of Law completed
the observance of its centennial year with conferences, lectures and a Convocation
with Chief Justice Earl Warren as the principal speaker at which Robert R. McCormick
Hall and the Owen L. Coon Library were dedicated. McCormick Hall, which includes
the Owen L. Coon Library, completes the Law School Quadrangle and nearly doubles
the facilities of the older existing buildings, Levy Mayer Hall and Elbert H.
Gary Library.

Three stories high, and completely air conditioned, Robert R. McCormick
Hall includes an ornamental foyer, an auditorium, a court room, a lounge, two new
classrooms, an ornate conference and seminar room and 35 additional offices for
the faculty, teaching associates and assistants and for the Law Review and Jour-
nals.

The Owen L. Coon Library connects with the Elbert H. Gary Library rais-
ing the total book capacity of the combined Library from 180,000 to about 400,000
volumes and the seating capacity from 184 to 300. The new Library includes
carrels and typewriter cubicles, a faculty library, a treasure room, a browsing
alcove, a room for microphotographic equipment, a number of new offices and an
elevator. Some offices and the reference section at the north end of the Elbert
H. Gary Library have been remodeled and expanded.

Architecturally, the new buildings conform to the older structures but
the new reading room features blond tan metal shelving and matching reading tables
with chairs upholstered in light brown naugahyde. The treasure room and the
browsing alcove have special furniture and equipment. The ceilings have acousti-
cal tiles and fluorescent lighting fixtures. Altogether, the new buildings give
a modern and cheerful effect.

One feature of the centennial observation has been the publication of
Northwestern University School of Law - A Short History (by James A. Rahl and
Kurt Schwerin), which was distributed at the Convocation. The History includes
a chapter on the Law Library.
