mMike Baker's Grill at 7:30 p.m. More information is on the CALL listserv and there will be a
                telephone tree notification.

                The President's Letter

CALL Survey of Fall 1998: Did the nearly 10% of the membership who filled out and returned
the survey wonder what happened to it? While the Board pondered the low response, we ulti-
mately decided less news is good news. Your mostly positive responses were compiled and
mconsidered. Following is a summary of the Business Meeting Attendance, with commentary in
                brackets.
0 1) Are the meetings conveniently located? All replies said yes! One suggestion-hold meetings
                at locations other than Hotel Allegro; it might result in more interest. [Meetings Committee tried;
cost ruled out other locations this year; see Question 5.]
                2) Is the time of meetings appropriate? Most members still voted for lunch and breakfast. Two
suggested evenings, two preferred breakfast (and one noted it could be earlier than 8:15 a.m.!)
Two asked about the possibility of 4 p.m. teas/coffees.
                3) Is Friday still a good day for the meeting? Again, 90% voted for Friday. One respondent won-
dered whether to try a Tuesday or Wednesday meeting, just to see if attendance is any better.
                4) Is the price of the meal too much? Surprisingly, everyone who responded said no.
Q 5) What is your ceiling price for Breakfast? For Lunch? Of those who responded to this question,
the price for breakfast ranged from $10-$25, with $15 getting the most votes, closely followed
.I , by $10. Lunch limits ranged from $15-$37, $20 the heavily preferred choice.
                6) Would brown bag lunches be preferable? Almost 3 to 1 voted for at least one such lunch a
year. One person suggested a hot dog bar instead. [Hmm...]
                7) What would entice you to come regularly? The overwhelming response was good relevant
speakers, interesting programs and the opportunity to network.
() ~Some of the Board's most recent accomplishments included reinstating a Certificate of De-
posit for the Association, checking progress on the CALL's Long-Range Plan for 1997-2000,
and reviewing existing Committees for their structure and purpose. Board results: The amount of
the CD is $3,000. To date we have accomplished more than we had expected on CALL's Long-
Range Plan, although some goals had to be put off for financial reasons. The Duplicate Exchange
Committee was dissolved. Grants and Chapter Awards are now one committee with bifurcated
responsibilities, and the Placement Committee has been merged into Recruitment. More detail on
the committee changes is available in the Board minutes for May.
A reminder to Heads of Libraries to complete the survey for CALL's Union List of Legisla-
tive Histories and forward to Kevin Gray at Gonzaga University by August 1. Thanks! To date,
five of our member libraries have sent him their compilations.
        C. , ~My term is over and I've been bumped to Past-President. Mixed feelings accompany this
move-regrets for not having done more (is this why politicians keep running for office?) but
pleased that some changes and progress have been made towards keeping CALL a viable entity.
INC - As a firm believer in CALL, you haven't seen the last of me...
                                                                        -Carolyn Hayes, CALL President
