The millenium approaches, whether you believe it starts in 2000 or a short 366 days later. We are fortunate to work in a profession and in environments where the demand for information, often the latest, is constant. We have access to electronic information for many reasons-to pro- 0) vide information to our patrons in a timely, cost-effective manner, to deal with liability issues, O 'i and to keep up with the clients (or the Joneses). We also have access to the technology, with its inherent costs of scale, as the gateway to provide this effective and efficient information. The issue of access to information, however, is not limited to each of us in our own work situa- tion. Our lives both professional and personal are and will be continuously affected by the leaps in technology development and the quantity of information it delivers. If we look beyond our own world, we realize that the average person does not have the same kind of access. ZThe Illinois Information Advantage is the Illinois Library Association's (ILA) public policy agenda for 1999. The goal of this initiative is To insure that every Illinois citizen has equitable access to the information that will be needed to succeed over the next decade. Its solution: Create the Illinois Information Advantage, a statewide initiative organized and administered by libraries, to provide access to a broad array of digitized resources and training in the use of those resources. Its request: We ask that you support legislation in the Illinois Systems Act that will create this new program and an appropriation in the Illinois Secretary of State's grants budget to 0fund the program. At ILA's invitation, CALL's Board is writing a letter of support for such legislation. Each of you, as individuals or as part of an organization in the business of providing information, might think about the importance of such an initiative and choose to act in support of such an effort.
