           Women in Criminal Justice

                     A   Policy   Statement

  BOARD  OF DIRECTORS, NATIONAL COUNCIL ON CRIME AND  DELINQUENCY


E  FFORTS TO CONTROL crime and de-
   linquency should utilize the full
potential and the manifold talents of
women  in every branch of the crimi-
nal justice system and the organiza-
Lions and institutions related to it. Ac-
cordingly, the Board of Directors of
the National Council on Crime and
Delinquency recommends the follow-
ing course of action on the status of
women  in the field of criminal justice.
  Criminal justice Agencies.-Criminal
ustice agencies should examine their
:urrent policies and practices on re-
:ruitment, selection, utilization, train-
ing, and compensation  of women
nrployees; should assess the ways
these policies and practices affect
women  differently from men; and
should promptly implement  proce-
lures aimed at removing all restric-
tions to equal opportunity.
  Criminal justice agencies should es-
tablish training programs to assist
their management in complying with


the  law as expressed in affirmative ac-
tion  programs applicable to women.
   To  encourage  and  facilitate the
 movement   of women  into manage-
 ment  positions, criminal justice agen-
 cies should commit themselves mor-
 ally and financially to management
 training and staff development for
 women   employees.  Special efforts
 may   be necessary with regard  to
 women   in racial minorities.
   LEAA.-The   Law  Enforcement As-
 sistance Administration of the United
 States Department of Justice should
 require recipients of LEAA funds to
 comply  with  federal statutes and
 guidelines upholding equal opportu-
 nity for women.  LEAA   should  fi-
 nance  the development of technical
 assistance programs on the use  of
 women   in criminal justice profes-
 sions.
   Educational   Institutions.-Educa-
 tional institutions should organize,
 improve, and  expand curricula and
