From the Section Chairman...
Our Section and the American Bar Association had a
successful meeting in Atlanta from July 29 through August 3.
At the sessions a number of eventful actions were taken, some
of which are noted in this issue of BUSINESS LAW MEMO.
We have just concluded an extraordinary year under
the very able leadership of Hank Wheeler. He leaves me a
substantial challenge just to try to match the quality
performance that he gave.   I look forward to my year as
chairman of the Section.
Our Section now numbers over 50,000 members. I am
told this makes our Section larger than any voluntary bar
association in the world, except for the ABA. It is a section
made up of many very distinguished and able lawyers and can
confidently be viewed as the voice of the corporate, banking
and business law community.
The Section will continue to be intimately involved in
matters affecting our profession, and especially the inter-
ests of the corporate bar and their clients. We have grown
accustomed to this role in the ABA. As the new Model
Rules of Professional Conduct made its way toward adoption
in Atlanta, the Section participated actively in the shaping
of the final product which emerged. We hope to contribute

ABA Adopts Ethics Code; Responds
to Beckham Amendment
At the ABA Annual Meeting in Atlanta, the Assembly
and Board of Governors took action on two matters in which
the Section of Corporation, Banking and Business Law has
had much interest.
Six years to succeed
First, the House of Delegates accepted the latest
proposal of the Kutak Commission. After six years of
drafting, debate, and redrafting, the new Model Rules of
Professional Conduct has been officially blessed by the
American Bar Association. This does not make it binding
on American lawyers, however. For that to happen, it must
still be adopted in each state by the appropriate bodies
that have aut hority for establishing the professional
standards governing lawyers.
