Our Section has grown to more than 43,000 members. In the coming year it will have more than 50 committees with several more planned. The Section is the voice of the business lawyer. Its job is to serve our various constituencies, which include the public interest as well as the interests of the profession. Both are important and both receive the dedicated attention of our Section's officers, Council members, and committee chairmen and members. Nan Barry heads up the Section's office at ABA headquarters in Chicago. We have moved strenuously in recent years to open up Section processes and invite the participation of interested members. We hope to build an increasing awareness that the Section exists to serve both its constituencies. I will try to be alert to ways in which we can improve our performance and welcome the comments and advice of our members. Although it is not possible to catalog all the areas with which we will be concerned in the coming year, we will obviously try to cover all the areas which should engage our attention. These include developments in professional respon- sibility, regulatory reform, and being alert to the new chal- lenges of a modern society. In his last report in the July Business Law Memo, Chairman Sommer announced the organization of new commit- tees concerned with health law, consumer finance organizations, employee benefits, and others. Beyond that, we are planning a committee to deal with new and changing developments in the Continued on page 2 Section Activity Reaches Crescendo in New Orleans Raising Capital for Small Business, a Section program tracing the development of a fictional corporation from its inception as a sole proprietorship through its first public offering, was singled out by a national legal newspaper as one of the best educational sessions held during the ABA's Annual Meeting in New Orleans last month. Presented jointly by the Committees on Corporate Law and Accounting, Federal Regu- lation of Securities, and Small Business, the program was one of approximately two dozen educational seminars and 50 com- mittee and subcommittee meetings convened by the Section in New Orleans. Over 2,000 Section members attended, representing almost 25% of the overall ABA registration of 8,300.
