                      Editorial: New Directions
                      for Behavioral Sciences

                      and the Law

Charles Ewing, Alan Felthous, and I are pleased to announce some new
directions for the journal beginning in 1999. The new directions represent an
expansion of what BS&L has to offer its readership.
The first change has to do with numbers. Volume 17 will include five issues, one
more than we have offered in the past. This change is due to the increased number
and quality of submissions we have had in the past two years. We now have enough
publishable submissions so that the increase is not only warranted, it is desirable.
The extra issue will be a Current Perspectives on Behavioral Sciences and the
Law and it will contain Research Reports, Special Perspectives, and other kinds
of articles (see below) that address up-to-date data and views on law and behavioral
science topics. The increased number of issues also will allow us to be quicker in
getting Research Reports, Special Perspectives, and other articles into print than
we sometimes have been able to in the past.
The second change has to do with the journal's aims and scopes. Although
we still will specialize in the interface between mental health and law and
publish manuscripts on virtually any topic in the broad, behavioral science and law
area, we want to expand our coverage so that it regularly includes more than US
and Canadian perspectives. We are making concerted efforts to solicit and pub-
lish manuscripts from authors outside of the US and Canada. We have appointed
four international editors who will have the responsibility of soliciting and pro-
cessing manuscripts from various regions throughout the world. The international
editors are: Professor David Carson, Faculty of Law, University of Southampton,
ENGLAND; Dr Ian Freckelton, Faculty of Law, LaTrobe University,
Melbourne, AUSTRALIA; Dr Kwang-bai Park, Department of Psychology,
Choongbuk National University, Chungju City, SOUTH KOREA; and Dr
Henning Sass, Department of Psychiatry, University of Aachen, GERMANY.
Their contact information is now listed on the inside cover of the journal.
Moreover, we will devote one of our special issues each year to International
Perspectives related to a special topic. The theme of this year's international
issue is Therapeutic Jurisprudence. I am co-editing the international issue
with Professor Carson. The theme for the international issue in 2000 will be
Psychopathic Disorders. Dr Felthous will be co-editing the issue with Dr Sass.
We will address differences in style across regions and countries by changing our
style requirements. Until now, BS&L has required adherence to the latest version
of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association or the newest
edition of a Uniform System of Citation (the infamous Blue Book of legal
publications in the US). Beginning immediately, we encourage authors to use APA
or Blue Book/Law Review styles but announce we are willing to accept manuscripts
using any professional publication style in which the author is used to writing
