            EDITORIAL CHARTER




  This issue marks the emergence of a new interdisciplinary jour-
nal addressing the interface between law and the behavioral
sciences. As a quarterly publication, each issue will deal in depth
with a particular facet of forensic mental health from multiple
disciplinary viewpoints. The editorial policy for such thematic
presentations is stated succinctly below:
    Behavioral Sciences and the Law is a new inter-
    disciplinary journal emphasizing the thematic presenta-
    tion of contemporary and often controversial issues in-
    volving the mental health-law interface. Each issue of
    the journal will present a specific topic related to both
    theory and practice of Behavioral Sciences and the
    Law. Articles will emphasize different perspectives,
    theoretical orientations and disciplines. The Journal
    encourages original creative discussions and synthesis
    in the designated topical areas, and aims for a better
    understanding of complex relationships between law
    and the behavioral sciences. In presenting often con-
    troversial issues from diverse but scholarly viewpoints,
    the Journal will foster informed debate and expanded
    understanding in areas of related interest in law,
    psychiatry, and the behavioral sciences.
  A reasonable balance between scholarship and readability is
sought in the manuscripts solicited by the editors or submitted by
prospective authors. Current journals published in the mental
