THE BRIEF
Volume 63, Number 1 Fall, 1967
Movements and Trends of the Profession*
By Edward W. Kuhn
Past President of the American Bar Association
Two years ago, this week, it was my pleasure and like-
wise my misfortune to be a guest of Phi Delta Phi at its
37th biennial convention in Quebec City, Canada.
It was a pleasure because it is always pleasant to be in
your group on any occasion and there have been many
since I was initiated by Roosevelt Inn.
It was a misfortune because you who were in attendance
will readily recall the strike by the employees of the Cana-
dian Pacific Railroad which operates the Chateau Fron-
tenac Hotel. This week the Canadian Bar Association is
holding it's annual convention at said hotel and today my
immediate successor in the American Bar Association is
delivering his address. My wife and I were on the thir-
teenth floor with about six bags because we were on an
extended trip for the American Bar Association with no
elevators except those run by the desk clerks who knew
nothing about their operation. On our departure the eleva-
tor stuck. You will also recall after the dining room closed,
we found a delightful restaurant across the historic square
only to watch it burn down the following night at 2:00
A.M. Nevertheless, the convention, due to the hearty na-
ture of its members, continued, the only occupants in one
of the most delightful hotels on the North American Con-
tinent, making their own beds, finding their own towels,
rustling their own food, and so on. That is one convention
that we will never forget and was one of the highlights
* Address at the 38th Formal Banquet ,A4,, Sept. 6, 1967.
