In the area of the Bill of Rights, perhaps the most momentous event of 1971 was the publication of the so-called Pentagon Papers and the legal tug-of-war that followed, resulting in a landmark decision whose future is clouded by what is coming to be known as the Nixon Court. The journal for 1971 seeks to place this event in perspective with an estimate of the career and historical signifi- cance of the opinions of the late Mr. Justice Black, and with an analysis of the meaning of the Supreme court decision-in which Mr. Justice Black played a central role-as it affects the constitutional guarantee of the free- dom of the press. In this issue also are tributes to three splendid Americans all of whom related their art and craft to the living world of which they were very much a part-Herbert Biberman in the production of cinenia, Max Weber in the graphic arts, and Paul Strand in photography. If there is a retrospective quality about this issue it is neither nostalgic nor acci- dental. Both the theme and the contents are dedicated to the young generation of Americans taking their place in the politics of the nation for the first time. The dedication is to them, and to the validity of the theory of the continuity of history. May the lessons of the past help them chart a brighter future for all mankind.-JAMES ARONSON, Editor.
