Abstract Researchers have used multiple sources of archival data (e.g., newspapers, trial
transcripts, biographies, and periodicals) to examine parricides and other types of homicide.
However, the validity of using newspapers as a form of data has been accepted in an anecdotal
and impressionistic manner. This paper compares newspapers with one particular type of court
record, the sentencing verdict. The two divergent sources of data are used to create a
convergence rate, proffering evidence of convergent validity in two disparate archival sources.
Findings indicate that there is convergence in the emic factors related to parricide. The
implications for using archival records for homicide research and democracy are discussed.

Introduction
Parricide has been researched extensively for the past 30 years. It has been shown to be one of
the rarest forms of homicide, constituting between 2 % of general homicides in the USA (Shon
and Targonski 2003; Walsh and Krienert 2009) and 5.3 % in South Korea (Ahn et al. 2012). In
addition to its low frequency, the demographic characteristics of parricide victims and of-
fenders, their motivation, weapons used, and their portrayal in the media have been fruitfully
pursued using aggregate datasets, clinical samples, and media reports (Heide and Petee 2007a,
b; Heide and Boots 2007). The way parricide has been operationalized has also varied: some
have included stepparents as victims and stepchildren as offenders in the definition while
