I would not enter on my list of friends,
Though graced with polished manners and fine sense,
                                     Yet wanting sensibility, the man
Who needlessly sets foot upon a worm.- COWPER.

Vol. 30. Boston, June, 1892. No. 1.

   Always kill
fish as soon as
they are taken
from the water
by a sharp
blow with a
baton or stick
on the back of
the head.
  They keep
better, eat bet-
ter, and are in
all respects
better than
those that suf-
fer just before
dying.
   The best
fishermen in
Europe and
America know
this-the suf-
fering of any
animal just be-
fore dying al-
ways tends to
make the meat
unwholesome
and sometimes
poisonous.

SUMMER.

           SEVENTY-FOUR.
The fifth of June makes us seventy-four
years old and gives us the privilege of drawing
another $100 on the annuity we bought of our
 Massachusetts Hospital Life Insurance Com-
pany many years ago.
We are sorry to say that our good friend,

Vice-President Hill, receives some letters from
people [who perhaps approve the mutilation
of horses for life, and the unlimited dissection
of dogs, cats and other animals] in which they
express substantially their entire willingness
that we should visit the Hot Springs of Arkansas
for an indefinite period - but on the other
hand we are receiving lots of kind letters from

good friends in our own and other countries in
which they express the hope that we may still
have before us many years of active service,
and all kinds of happiness both in this world
and the next. GEo. T. ANGELL.

Every kind word you say to a dumb
animal or bird will make you happier.
