The American Indian Law Newsletter begins with this issue as a review of
Federal legislation that affects Indian Affairs. It is experimental and designed
to ascertain whether a weekly publication of its kind will be useful to lawyers
and others involved in Indian Affairs. The format is tentative as are the con-
tents. We hope to learn from experience what will be useful and to change as we
learn.
At the present time our efforts are quite modest: we are reviewing the
Congressional Record and reporting everything in that publication that pertains
to American Indians. Since the Congressional Record is a daily report on every-
thing that transpires on the floor of the U.S. Senate and House of Representa-
tives, it will be noted in this Newsletter.
When a bill is introduced, this will be indicated with the bill's number,
a short description of its contents and the name of the Senator or Representa-
tive introducing it. For those interested in obtaining a copy of the bill or
future information about it, it is suggested that they write directly to the
man who introduced it.
Any further action on a bill that is reported in the Congressional Record
will be noted in this Newsletter. Thus, if there is any discussion on the
floor of the Senate or House, this will be indicated as will passage of the
bill when this occurs.
This Newsletter will also contain note of miscellaneous items appearing in
the Congressional Record applicable to American Indians.
Any criticism, comment or suggestions regarding this publication will be
greatly appreciated. Please address communications to the Editor or Assistant
Editor. If you know of others who would be interested in receiving the News-
letter, we would be happy to send them copies upon receipt of their name and
address.

Director, Indian Programs
