Membership peaed at 155,399 as 13,164 new members joined the Asso- ciation. At the ame time law school enrollment increased by 20 per cent over the previous year. The ABA took important steps toward helping criminal offenders and improving corrections systems. Young lawyers volunteered to serve as assistant parole officers, while others worked to assist families of military personnel who are prisoners of war or missing in action, The Association has taken the lead in pro bono publico activity. Approximately 24,000 membership invitational letters were sent to new admittees of the bar, resulting in an average of almost 300 new members per month from this source Early in 1971 mail campaigns were conducted in the states of Arkansas, Ohio and Utah The close of the year saw the launching of the most ambitious membership promotion undertaken by the Association in 15 years Mail cam- paigns were initiated in Arizona Illinois, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
