Bar Foundation Launches
Three Research Projects
Three important new projects of legal research have
been authorized by the American Bar Foundation, at
the request of committees of the American Bar Asso-
ciation. All of the studios will be carried on in the
American Bar Center in Chicago, and each promises
results having both current interest and practical value
to the entire profession.
The new projects are:
1. A study of the problems of unauthorized practice.
The immediate objective is a compilation of state and
local statutes, agreements and statements of principles
between bar asocitions and lay groups, as well as
a pf r eent mplaints, anefrs, decrees
and opinions in unauthoiz*ractice cases. This study
was requested by the ABA (6mmittee on Unauthorized
Practice of the Law. A broader program of research
covering other aspects of unauthorized practice may
be undertaken later.
2. A comparative study of American corporation
statutes, both business and non-profit, annotated to
sections of the model acts proposed by the Corporate
Laws committee of the Section of Corporation, Bank-

and statutory provisions, bibliography of texts and law
review articles, and discussion of leading cases. The

in the 48 states and the District of Columbia.

A Message from
The American Bar News is n added service to mem-
bers of the American Bar Assbciation. It will bring to
busy lawyers a brief, informative, interesting report of
the things the Association is doing in their interest.
As our Association has, grown markedly in size its
activities have accelerated. This has created the need
for better communications-a medium through which
every member can gain a clearer conception of the
dyhamirs of the great national organization of which
he is a part. We expect the American Bar News to be

ABA Membership at New
Peak and Still Rising
Perhaps no national organization, professional or
non-professional, can match the dramatic growth in
membership of the American Bar Association.
Although the greatest gain of all has come in the
first half of 1956, the story goes back much farther
than that. It is a record of steady, consistently accel-
erated growth beginning in 1936 with the establish-
ment of the House of Delegates. That policy-making
body provides a national forum in which the entire
profession has a representative voice. It has served to
knit together more closely the organized bar in the
U. S., composed of more than 1,500 state and local
associations.
In the 20 years since formation of the House of
Delegates membership in the American Bar Associa-
tion has tripled-from 28,000 in 1936 to about 85,000
now.
As of July 1, new member applications had passed
the 32,000 mark in this year's unprecedented national
membership development program. The number was
continuing to rise, as solicitations progress in various
parts of the country. The final results of this year's
special membership effort will not be known until the
79th annual meeting convenes in Dallas, August 27-3 1.
This has been by far the biggest year of growth in
the Association's history. One of the most significant
aspects of the 1956 campaign has been the spectacular
gain of the Junior Bar Conference, which embraces all

a cohesive force, an intimate link between the many
lawyers who make up the American Bar Association
and carry on its work.
More than that, we hope it will prove to be a wel-
come visitor to your desk each month-a newsy letter
from headquarters as intimate as a letter from an old
friend-filled with information you will want to have
because it is interesting and because it concerns you
and your welfare.
