Some of our most exciting times and events lie before us. It is my pleasure to introduce our initiatives for the upcoming American Bar year. Our primary public service focus will be serving America's most vulnerable citizens: its children. Through our advocacy-based initiative, One Child, One Lawyer, we will make the lives of countless chil- dren in this country better. This is a three-part approach to serve America's children by 1. Providing a voice in court through service as a guardian ad litem, 2. Ensuring a more permanent and loving home by facilitating pro bono guardianships and adop- tions, and 3. Creating school-based legal clinics so that at risk children can have their legal issues addressed without interfering with their educa- tions. I challenge all young lawyers, particularly our state and local affiliates, to consider taking one case, one initiative, or one effort to assist one child this coming year. Our objective is not to serve all children with a broad brush. Rather, we seek to make a fun- damental difference in the life of one child at a time. Children are silently crying out for our help in each and every commu- -k.$ nity in which we live. It is our U duty and privilege to serve these children. We alone, as lawyers, can provide permanent answers to some of their greatest questions. Only lawyers can provide permanent homes, opportunities, and encour- agement for them to succeed, and we will do so with your help. At our Fall National Public Service Conference in Pittsburgh on October 9-12, we will hear from some of the leading children's advocates in the country and explore ways in which we can make an even greater dif- ference. We will hold A Summit for Children that will inspire, motivate, and lead you to providing a voice to a child in your community. Please join me and your col- leagues in Pittsburgh this fall to see how we will change the lives of those children who so desperately need it. Along with our role as the public service arm of the ABA, we also serve as the national voice of young lawyers. We will continue to promote issues important to young lawyers this year. One way in which we will do so is by advocating strength through diversity. This is a programming-based initiative that will offer workshops at each of our conferences this year. Through two of our existing committees, Women in the Profession and Minorities in the Profession, along with a newly created committee, Lawyers with Disabilities, we will advocate for ways in which our law firms, companies, bar organi- zations, and, most importantly, communities can grow and develop more effectively by including all individuals in our society. The Lawyers with Disabilities Special Commi ttee will also promote achievements of our col- leagues who have and are currently overcoming some of the greatest obstacles to success. One highlight of the year will take place in Memphis at the Spring National Public Service Conference. In the birthplace of blues and home of the best barbecue, the Minorities in the Profession Committee will be staging the Trial of the Century, which will feature a CLE pres- entation that re-enacts one of the trials that ultimately led to the Brown v. Board ofEducation decision. Great trial lawyers, joined by young lawyers as second chairs, will present parts of the trial that changed the fabric of America fifty years ago in the spring of 1954. The Division also seeks to strengthen its ties with its affiliated state and local bar organizations. Our network of affiliates is unique in the ABA community. We will provide services for state and local young lawyer groups to build membership, deepen the commitment of their existing members, and fulfill their own dreams. We embrace the fact that anything that strengthens an affil- iate will strengthen the ABA/YLD as well. To do so, we will continue to offer the Affiliate leader's Forum, which began in New Orleans, at the upcoming Fall and Spring Conferences. For starters, I personally guarantee each reader fine food and drink, CLE, professional development oppor- tunities, live entertainment, networking opportunities with successful and optimistic young lawyers from across the country, and, if the mood and setting are right, perhaps even a stirring rendition of a song of your choice. To collect, simply attend one of the YLD's National Conferences, where I will be more than happy to point you in the right direction. You receive The Affiliate because you are a young lawyer involved in the YLD or one of its affiliates, such as a state or local bar. It is your written connec- tion to the YLD, its meetings, agenda and resources. Things are different this year: The Affitiate will potentially reach more active young bar leaders than ever before. We are pleased to have this unprecedented opportunity to inform these leaders of the work, benefits, and vitality of the YLD. This first issue is targeted specifically toward new bar leaders and offers a toolbox of informative articles designed to assist them in effec- tively managing a new bar year. On the agenda for The Affiliate this year: • Jonathan Cole's ambitious Special Project, One Child, One Lawyer, will be detailed from start to finish, in what will undoubtedly be an exciting success story. * Other success stories from around the YLD and around the country will be profiled, to share inno- vations in public and member service and to rec- ognize affiliates with exceptional involvement or activities. Articles will explain the Division's structure, pur- pose, goals, and activities. Opportunities for fel- lowships, grants, and awards will be announced. Young lawyers looking for a roadmap will find examples of proven paths to leadership. The problem-solving branch of the YLD, the Affiliate Assistance Team, will be shown in action to illustrate the tremendous benefits of this service. Our editors' contact information will be included with each story. We ask for your input, story ideas, and feedback. The Affiliate is a product of the Division, and provides a service to affiliate leaders. Please help us do our best. The structure of the YLD, the purpose and value of affiliation, the mechanics of the affiliation process, and the practical workings of the Division will be explained in detail, with current examples and insights. Young lawyer leaders will be profiled, with the goal of sharing strategies for a full and rewarding career in this-or any-professional service organization. Bar leaders with special ties to the YLD will also be profiled to demonstrate the con- nections between this group and the larger bar and professional communities. The most vibrant events of the YLD, our confer- ences and meetings, will be reviewed and pre- viewed for attendees and non-attendees alike. Either way, this is your publication.
