If we can change our thoughts, we can change the world. -Hl.M Tomlinson (1877-1958) n the enclosed 1998-99 Year at a Glance brochure and in the July/August issue of The Affiliate, I outlined the theme, projects, and plans for this bar year. Projects and plans, how- ever, are merely words on paper if we do not truly believe in the causes behind them or in our ability to implement them. From Service to Seniors, our public service initiative for the elderly, to Beyond the Boundaries, our membership service initiative on professional development and global awareness, to the reor- ganization of the national meeting and regional meeting structure, each initiative needs each of us to change not only our thoughts, but the thoughts of those around us. Young and Old We are a nation that focuses attention on youth-to being young, to looking young, to serving the young. I believe as much as anyone that the youth are the future of our nation. But as a nation, we not only have a future, we have a past and a present. We have our elderly. People who changed our world by their past actions and people who have much to give to us in our present. I was blessed to grow up with aunts and uncles and grandpar- ents who were well beyond the age of fifty when I was born. My losing them early in my life is a personal tragedy, but it also has motivated me to showcase the wisdom, experience, and guidance that our seniors can bring to the lives of our children and our colleagues; to encourage each of you to view old age, not as something to fear or to regret, but as a time of continued inde- pendence, dignity, and respect-a time to share a lifetime of experience. Each of us would be viewed by the average person as well- educated with years of college, graduate school, and law school and numerous degrees hanging on our walls. But if you take two minutes to look at your life, did the most valuable lessons you learned-the lessons that guide the major decisions in your life and the lessons you will share with your children-come from a textbook, a distinguished professor, and ivy-covered walls or from late night chats with your parents, a walk with a favorite aunt or uncle, or a visit with your grandmother at the family homestead? I would venture to bet, it's the latter. So as you attend the Fall and Spring AOP Meetings, as you consider where to allocate your public service time, remember the lessons you learned, take a moment to thank those who taught us the lessons about life. Take a moment to assist them in living productive and comfort- able lives so they can continue to share those lessons with others. Hence, the major project for duplication this year will be the Senior Outreach Project in which young lawyers work with social service and other agencies that already enter the homes of the elderly to provide basic legal advice on financial powers of attor- ney, durable powers of attorney for health care, consumer fraud awareness, and elder abuse. Several consumer pamphlets will be available for affiliates to distribute on home visits or on visits to senior centers, commu- nity centers, and senior fairs. Programs on Advance Directives workshops, Legal Beagles, creating and distribut- ing a senior citizens handbook, and elder abuse prevention will take place at the Fall AOP in Philadelphia. Affiliate leaders also will have an opportunity to see a live demonstration of an advance directives workshop, conducted by the Philadelphia Young Lawyers, at the public service project on Friday, October 30, 1998. The project will take place at a local senior center and give all of us a chance to learn about senior programs and help brighten the center by painting, planting, and leaving a little of the ABA/YLD in Philly. When in Rome One of my duties as your chair is to represent our young lawyer group to international bar asso- ciations and to bring their ideas and, through the international guests program, their leaders to you. One of the most fascinating aspects of meeting international young lawyers is to become aware of how much they know about us. So if you don't know whether ypu should contact the editor of The Affiliate or theiABA/YLD %yebmaster, and you don't even know wh6 th{se people may be, just contact me. In past years, the Division's com- munications arms, The Affiliate, The Young Lawyer, YLD at a Glance, committee publications, and the ABA/YLD webpage, operated inde- pendently. Now, we have a yearly plan of action and a team comprised of the people in charge of each communication effort. We have made some great plans for the year. The Affiliate will feature short and snappy articles; its purpose, to com- municate to state and local affiliate leaders and ABA/YLD leaders, remains the same. New items in The Affiliate will be very short reports on state and local affiliate happenings, regular reports on the Service to Seniors and Beyond the Boundaries projects, reports from the Affiliate Assistance Team on what resources are available to affiliate lead- ers, and information on how to draft and submit resolutions to the ABA/YLD Assembly. The ABA/YLD webpage is another great resource to get and post information. The webpage has been redesigned this year to be more exciting and user friendly. Lori Weems, the vice-director of Communications, has dedicated many hours to making the webpage a practical way to interact with the Division. Also, the Communications Team is creating numerous listservs. I am particularly excited about the list- servs for all current state and local affiliate leaders. Over twenty listservs will be created and the s' chances of you not being a part of one are slim. You should have received a mes- sage on your e-mail telling you the list- servs you are a mem- ber of and how to send e-mail messages to your fellow mem- bers. As if that were not enough change for one year, we are drafting media plans to promote the great activities of the ABA/YLD to the public. Our first media event will take place at the public service project in Philadelphia. Working in conjunction with the ABA's Media Department and the Philadelphia Bar Association will guarantee our success in this new venture.
