By Carl Baker T he Affiliate Outreach Project, or AOP, is the heart of the ABA Young Lawyers Division (the ABA/YLD). The AOP reaches out to young lawyer sections of state and local bar associations to pro- vide assistance and guidance in managing their young lawyer groups, to share ideas and informa- tion about the activities of other af- filiates around the country, and to encourage affiliates' implementation of public and member service projects. The AOP is designed as a forum in which affiliates from across the country come togeth- er to share ideas on how to better serve the public and their members. It strives to create a productive atmosphere in which affiliates can be exposed to great ideas on everything from public service projects to professional develop- ment tips while, at the same time, having a good time. The AOP accomplishes this through its four constituent committees. Affiliate Assistance The Affiliate Assistance Team, chaired by Russell T. Ginise (213/272-2711), is an invalu- able resource to ABA/YLD affiliates. Each member of the team has expertise in affiliate management and organization, has served as an affiliate bar leader, and has worked through many of the same problems faced by young lawyer leaders new to their positions. The team's mission is to provide assistance on issues involved with affiliate management such as fundraising, membership retention and/or recruitment, publicity, and project implementa- tion. This assistance is available at ABA/YLD meetings and AOP conferences. In addition, upon request, team members can make presen- tations at your local affiliate meetings. Affiliate Assistance members will be avail- able for consultation at the Fall AOP Conference in Tampa, Florida. The Affiliate Newsletter The Affiliate newsletter is a publication for affiliate leaders. Its purpose is to: (1) inform affiliates around the country about events and meetings of the Affiliate Outreach Project and the ABA/YLD; (2) inform affiliates regarding ABA/YLD resources that are available to them; (3) showcase public service projects imple- mented by affiliates to encourage other affili- ates to implement similar projects; and (4) to disseminate useful information to affiliates regarding affiliate management, professional development, and other topics of interest to affiliates and their mem- bers. National Conferences The National Conferences Team plans and organizes the AOP National Conferences that are held in the fall and spring of each year. At AOP conferences, young lawyer bar lead- ers from affiliates all over the country meet for a few days to showcase and share ideas on suc- cessful projects and programs developed by their affiliates. Successful affiliate programs are showcased in small group workshops or panel discussions at the conferences. At the end of each program, each attendee receives a workbook containing all the information neces- sary to replicate the program in his or her affiliate back home. Affiliates are encouraged to send represen- tatives to AOP conferences. The National Conferences Team randomly selects sites for the conferences to give each geographical area of the country affordable access to the meet- ings. This year's Fall AOP National Conference will be held in Tampa, Florida, on October 16-19, 1997. The Spring AOP Conference will be held in La Jolla, California, from May 14-16, 1998. AOP Subgrants Committee Every year, the AOP offers financial incentives (subgrants) to affiliates in an effort to encour- age the implementation of public and member service projects. The ABA/YLD Subgrants Committee reviews project proposals submit- ted by affiliates and selects those proposals that meet their criteria. Applications for public service subgrants are mailed in September of each year and completed applications are due by mid-November. Member service subgrants go out in January and are due back in mid- March. If you don't receive an application and need one, let Toni Harris know, at 312/988- 5629. As with anything in life, you will get out of the AOP what you put into it. To find out what the AOP can do for you and your affiliate start with the Fall AOP Conference in Tampa, Florida, October 16-19, 1997. AOP confer- ences are carefully planned and are a lot of fun. Each host committee goes out of its way to design social events that highlight the host city's unique flavor. Besides the fellowship and great programs, enjoy the Florida sunshine and hospitality. The Tampa host committee has a great program in store for you. And at the Spring AOP, for the first time, we are join- ing forces with TIPS (the ABA Section of Torts and Insurance Practice) in La Jolla, California. Arrive early and select from twelve CLE programs offered by TIPS on Wednesday, May 13, and Thursday, May 14. Watch for the full brochure the first week in January. 0i W hen The Affiliate's editors got together in Chicago to plan this year's articles, the first topic of discussion was, What is an affiliate? Who are our readers? What should they expect to gain from reading this newsletter? We realized W h that the name of this V U newsletter-The Affiliate-needed some Affi explanation. An affiliate of the By Mia American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (ABA/YLD) is a young lawyers section of a parent bar association, typically a state or county bar association. An affiliate exists in its own right, with its own bylaws and members (75 percent of whom must be eligible for membership in the ABA/YLD). Often, there is more than one affiliate per state. An affiliate is not controlled by the ABA/YLD, nor does it report to the ABA/YLD. Rather, an affiliate becomes a part of the ABA/YLD because of its par- ticipation in ABA/YLD pro- jects, meetings, and activi- ties. It should be noted that affiliates vary in size, purpose, and resources. Some affiliates have budgets exceeding $100,000, while others have shoestring budgets. The gov- erning structure of some affiliates has officers who are appointed by the senior bar, while other affiliates elect their own officers. No matter the differences among them, all affiliates seem to need and benefit from involvment with the ABA/YLD. Why Am I Getting This Newsletter? The purpose of this newslet- ter-The Affiliate-is to convey information to bar leaders around the country as to events, meetings, sub- grants, and other resources of the ABA/YLD and to inspire new pro- jects through feature articles high- lighting individual affiliate pro- jects and persons involved _ in public service and mem- bership support. This newsletter has a limit- ed circulation. It is sent to bar leaders of young lawyer affili- ates. It is not intended to be a gen- eral service for ABA/YLD mem- bers, but rather a specific publica- tion for affiliates and their leaders.
