Mentoring Youth At-Risk:
A Young Lawyer Success Story
By Keith R. Bevan

The Philadelphia Bar Association
Young Lawyers Section (Philadel-
phia YLS) has developed a daring,
new program-the Teenage Suc-
cess Mentoring Program. The pro-
gram recruits and trains young
lawyers to serve as mentors to
young people who have been adju-
dicated through the criminal jus-
tice system for drug abuse or drug-
related offenses.
The role of the mentor is to be a
friend and, hopefully become a con-
fidant and role model for the young
person.
Joel I. Fishbein is a twenty-seven-
year-old lawyer who has been prac-
The Affiliate: Joel, why did you
decide to become a volunteer in the
Teenage Success Mentoring Pro-
gram?
Joel: I heard about the program
through the bar association. It
wasn't the typical bar association
program which is law-related-I
have enough of that during my fif-
ty or sixty hours of work a week.
The fact that the program focused
on youth at-risk was particularly
interesting. The amount of good you
can do if you're successful in this
program is incredible. You could af-
fect one person's life in a way that
could be profound.
The Affiliate: What did you hope
to accomplish by being involved in
this program?
Keith R. Bevan is an assistant ed-
itor of The Affiliate and practices
law with the firm of Teilborg,
Sanders & Parks, P.C., in Phoenix,
Arizona.

Joel Fishbein and Kelvin Crooms
Joel: It's hard to say what you can
accomplish. You develop a friend-
ship and a relationship in which you
are helping someone. You hope this
person becomes a better person, in
part, because of your help. That's
what I hope to achieve.
The Affiliate: Kelvin, why did you
choose to voluntarily participate in
the Teenage Success Mentoring Pro-
gram?
Kelvin: Because I needed someone
to take time out with me. Joel took
me to a lot of places and I just want-
ed to try something new and I felt
that it would help me in the long
run, which it has. I never had a
mother or a father. Having the re-
lationship with Joel was like he was
the father I always wanted and
never had.

ticing general litigation in Phila-
delphia, Pennsylvania, since his
graduation from the Temple Uni-
versity School of Law in 1989.
Kelvin Crooms, an eighteen-year-
old who lives at Michael's House, a
residence operated by the Abraxas
Foundation, is mentored by Joel.
Joel has served as Kelvin's men-
tor, through the Philadelphia YLS
Teenage Success Mentoring Pro-
gram, for approximately one year.
Their story is inspiring; it exempli-
fies the benefit society receives as a
result of the Young Lawyers Divi-
sion and its affiliates'focus on pub-
lic service projects.
The Affiliate: How did you and
Joel meet?
Kelvin: There was a meeting at Mi-
chael's House. The faculty sat down
