WEISS Affiliates Those of us who are haves are both obligated and privileged to help the have nots in our society. The Young Lawyers Division (YLD) of the Amer- ican Bar Association is in a unique position to help those less fortunate, less educated, and less cared for. The Affiliate Outreach Program, or AOP, is a standing committee of the YLD dedicated to this public ser- vice work. Faced with trying to provide some sort of meaningful public service on a nationwide basis, constrained both by the enormity of the task and limita- tions on funds, the current philosophy of the AOP is embodied in the follow- ing adage: give a person food and he can eat for a day; teach a person to farm and he will never be hungry. The YLD includes among its mem- bers creative and dedicated young at- torneys from all over the country. On a daily basis, members of the YLD provide help to the needy in their home communities ranging from small towns to major metropolitan areas. Some perform these services on an individual basis and others as part of an organized state or local bar association effort. The YLD main- tains formal and informal relation- ships with young lawyer groups across the country, and through this network of affiliated organizations has access to the newest and most ef- fective ways for bar associations and individual lawyers to participate in public service projects. The essence of the AOP is that suc- cessful public service projects from all over the country can be collected, distilled, catalogued, and then dis- seminated to other bar association groups either as ideas for new projects or as aids to ongoing projects needing help. A local bar association need only inquire to learn how a certain project may have been done previously. Through the AOP, it will have access to all of the materials, resources, and individuals who made that project a success in another affiliate. Thus, the AOP is an information clearinghouse of public service projects to which local bar association groups can come for ideas on a specific project or help in selecting a public service project to undertake. The focal point of this clearing- house effort is two public service con- ferences held each fall and spring. (continued on page 15)
