Tarpley The Nebraska Young Lawyers Sec- tion's project on the Delivery of Legal Services to the EIderly was recognized by the ABA Young Lawyers Division as the most outstanding single project of an affiliate in the past year. Announce- ment of the award was made at the Annual Meeting in Chicago. The Section's Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services to the El- derly began work two years ago, ac- cording to Ann Gilbert of the Nebras- ka Young Lawyers Section. The first year of our committee's work was dedicated to devising a thorough plan of our effort to reach the state's elder- ly, and we also began one aspect of the programming, she explained. The group then set goals for its sec- ond year of activity. The committee set out to develop an interest in the legal needs of the elderly and to create a body of trained attorneys to deal with older citizens' needs. Addi- tionally, the Nebraska Young Lawyers tried to create an environment in which young lawyers and elderly cli- ents could easily gather, Gilbert said. Lori Wilson, an attorney with Southeast Nebraska Legal Services, which provides services to the elderly under the Older Americans Act, talks to an attendee of the Hebron Senior Fair about legal issues. With a $1,000 allotment from the Nebraska Young Lawyers, a $1,000 grant from the ABA Young Lawyers Division, and a $2,500 award from the ABA Commission on the Legal Problems of the Elderly, the Commit- tee started putting its plans into ac- tion. Gilbert pointed out that the ob- jectives called for three specific programs. The ElderLawReview, the ElderLaw training program, and the Senior Fair Programs. With three separate programs within the single project, we attempted to utilize a completely different set of resources for each project, in order to maxi- mize the number of attorneys in- volved with the elderly as well as to reduce the work that was required of the core committee, she said. ElderLawReview The ElderLawReview is a newsletter that details specific issues regarding the elderly and their individual legal needs. The newsletter represents an ongoing partnership between the Nebraska Department on Aging, the Nebraska Bar Association, and the committee. Attorneys from all areas of the state author articles for the publi- cation, and the Department on Aging provides the necessary typesetting and layout capability to publish a profes- sional-looking periodical. The quarter- ly publication is sent to bar leadership, attorneys who have expressed an in- terest in the needs of the elderly, and nonattorneys who are interested in the publication. Gilbert explained that the commit- tee's involvement in the newsletter planning and writing is substantial. Before each issue of the newsletter, the Committee selects the main topic. The newsletter may cover a single issue, such as insurance, or it (continued on page 5)
