handle is hein.journals/aff1 and id is 1 raw text is: pulihe byth yon lawer seto Closing the Communications Gap Over the past year it has become clear that greater communication and coordination between the ABA/ YLS and state and local bar organizations can save everyone effort and greatly increase productivity. The new newsletter, The Affiliate, is designed to meet the communication problems caused by the limited time and resources and geographical separation of the ABA/YLS membership. The Affiliate will be sent every six weeks to all officers of state and local YLS organizations. Through this, and our regional affiliates' meeting, we hope the ABA/YLS can operate as a clearinghouse and national source of research material to enhance the ability of affiliates to get their jobs done. This year many of the leadership responsibilities rest with the young lawyers who have been presidents of affiliates. You, the affiliate leaders understand the needs of ABA/YLS affiliates and how the ABA/YLS can best serve those needs. In this first issue you can find the names of people to contact concerning specific needs you may have. We intend to provide a continuous list of resource people as various projects and ideas are developed. We need to hear from you about your projects and materials that would be interesting to your counterparts in other states. Please contact me directly on any YLS matter of interest to you. We, of the ABA/YLS view our primary duty as being of service to you. We need to know if our job is being done correctly or how best you feel we can improve. Moreover, it is downright encouraging to know that our activities are of interest to you. R. William Ide III Chairman-Elect YLS Regional Workshops Five regional workshops have been scheduled during the coming year by ABA/YLS and various state and local affiliates. These workshops have been designed to permit an interchange of ideas between the national leadership and affiliates. Chairman William Ide and other executive board members will be available as resources consultants to the affiliate leadership. The national leadership will in turn utilize the skills of the local leadership to obtain concepts to improve the national programming. The emphasis at the conferences will be on relaying information about successful projects undertaken by the affiliates and the Section to other affiliates to give them ideas about successfully implementing new projects. Individuals from the Section and affiliates responsible for their projects will be present to describe the significance of their projects and provide detailed how- to-do-it information about the successful execution of these projects on a state or local level. Substantially all of the projects being undertaken by the Section for the 1976 Bar Year are designed for implementation at the state or local level through committees established by the affiliates. The projects which the Section will emphasize for state and local implementation will include: (1) Projects for reforming the rights of mental patients under the direction of the Section's Mental Health Committee; (2) Providing delivery of legal services to low and middle income persons, including the elderly, under the direction of the Section's Delivery of Legal Services Committee; (3) Reforming aspects of our criminal justice system under the direction of the Section's Criminal Justice Committee; (4) Informing law students and recent law school graduates of their professional responsibilities and conduct under the direction of the Section's Ethics Committee; and (5) Exposing young people to the legal system under the direction of the Section's High School Law and Explorer Law Committees.
