MESSAGE
FROM THE
PRESIDENT

The strides which the College has taken in
recent years under the direction of my illustrious
predecessors are very substantial. The number
and quality of our publications have improved.
Our meetings, always good fun, have had
programs of outstanding professional excellence.
Thanks to a great effort by our dedicated Estate
and Gift Tax Committee, the College has moved
firmly into the forefront of those who have been
trying to shape and guide our nation's policy in
the estate and gift tax area.
None of this, of course, would be possible were
it not for the help and assistance cheerfully given
by so many of our members. This support is vital
to our continued progress. None of our commit-
tees can function properly without the constant
backup of the membership generally. How can
this be best obtained? There have been many
suggestions. Obviously we cannot always take
polls. However, we shall try to do so when this
seems appropriate. We have all been heartened by
the high percentage of response when a poll has
been taken. Our relatively small but expert
membership is no doubt part of the answer. It has
helped us in pointing out at government hearings
that not only does the College have contact with
the grass roots of the probate field but that those

several committees urge every Fellow who has an
idea upon any of the subjects with which we deal
to express it by phone or letter to the appropriate

EDITORIAL
As a first order of business for the new editor of
Probate Notes, it seems highly appropriate to pay
recognition to his predecessor in office,
MALCOLM A. MOORE. Few people have
contributed more than Mal, not only to the
intellectual growth of the College but also to the
activities of the ABA Section of Real Property,
Probate and Trust Law and to the trusts and
estates field generally through writing, lecturing
and committee participation. Anyone working
with Mal cannot help but be struck by his
tremendous output of work, the product of a great
capacity to assimilate material and produce rapid
results. The College was fortunate to have his
energetic hand guiding Probate Notes, and his
presence will undoubtedly continue to be felt as a
regent and member of the Estate and Gift Tax
Reform and Nominating Committees of the
College, as well as in his other duties for the
Section and in his lecturing and writing.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS
PALM SPRINGS MEETING
The Canyon Hotel
March 1 to5,1978
Plans are in final stages and within the next 30
days you will be receiving a brochure and
reservation form in connection with this mid-winter
meeting.
Our meeting site, The Canyon Hotel Racquet &
Golf Resort is one of the most popular resorts in
Southern California during the winter months. The
space blocked for ACPC is, therefore, in great
demand and we are committed to a 40 day cut-off
factor. Thismeans unsold rooms must be released
back to The Canyon by January 19, 1978. Based on
past experience, this is likely to be a sell out, and
