MESSAGE
0*1ROM THE
.P DENT
In reviewing earlier messages from iritoming
Presidents I note that emphasis has been placed
on the educational and publications activities of
the College, with due recognition of the value
thereof and with due aspirations concerning the
future.
This year, not only by deliberate planning but
also by the force of circumstance, there are other
matters in which the College has been deeply
involved. These include the federal estate and gift
tax reforms; probate reform beyond the Uniform
Probate Code; and professional standards.
Quite possibly by the time this message is read
some estate and gift tax reforms' may be
enacted into law, or at least may be irrevocably
along the way to enactment. When that has
happened, at least for the time being, there will be
no more strenuous College activity vis-a-vis
Congress. Then the College must fulfill as best it
can its commitment to its members that, even
though they are highly qualified, they still must be
kept fully advised as to their obligations and
responsibilities to their clients under the new
circumstances. With this in mind, your officers
intend (if a new law is enacted), under the
leadership of the Estate and Gift Tax Reform
Committee, to deliver to the members a special
issue of Probate Notes devoted to an explanation
of the new Act and explaining the problems
presented by the new Act, with its new departures
and its very difficult deadlines. That issue of
Probate Notes, if in fact there is a new statute,
will be dispatched to you by first class mail.
(Continued on page 2)

Shortly before this issue went to press, the
Editor sent a memorandum to the College's
Editorial Board requesting articles and ideas from
Board members for inclusion in future issues of
Probate Notes. As the new Editor of this
publication, I want to ask all Fellows of the
College to send to me, or to the Assistant Editor,
Jackson M. Bruce, Jr., of Milwaukee, any ideas
for articles which should be included in Probate
Notes, or, more particularly, any new develop-
ments in your own jurisdiction of which other
Fellows should be made aware. One of the prime
purposes for the College, and in fact for this
publication, is to provide a means by which
Fellows can share information which is not readily
available from other publications containing
reports of cases, revenue rulings, etc. The Editor
earnestly solicits such information from Fellows,
preferably in the form of a short article which
could be published in Probate Notes, although
merely a letter setting forth an idea or conveying
some information which could be used to develop
an article would also be most appreciated.
The Editor also renews the request made in
prior editorials for all Fellows to give their views
to the Editor on the utility of Probate Notes, along
with any ideas for future articles.
CALENDAR OF EVENTS
WILLIAMSBURG MEETING
March 28th - April 1st, 1977
Plans are in the final stages and within the next
30 days or so you will be receiving a brochure and
reservation form in connection with the
Williamsburg meeting. This is likely to be a sell
out, and reservations will be issued only on a
first-come first-served basis.
Colonial Williamsburg needs little introduction.
It was the site of the Virginia Colonial Government
in pre-revolutionary times; among the members of
the Virginia Assembly were George Washington,
Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry and other early
and influential patriots; and the Williamsburg
