RE, and WILLIAM ROY VALLANCE President's Message The importance of international law in the world economy is exemplified in the interest in and knowl- edge of the legal impacts of the Common Market. More lawyers have been reading and studying the Treaty of Rome and the rules adopted by the legis- lative commission than any other international mul- tiparty treaty, including the charter of the United Nations. This points up the important place of the work of the Section of International and Com- parative Law in the American Bar Association. I venture to suggest that we must continue to ex- pand our friendly relations with lawyers of other nations, particularly those from Central and South America. The Special Committee in charge of this work is stressing the hospitality and reception of the lawyers of other nations who come to our shores. We can learn much from them, and help them to understand us. Mutual understanding will promote mutual respect and friendship with our brothers of the profession in other nations. During the coming year, we hope to hold the World Conference on World Peace Through Law. This conference conducted under the sponsorship of the American Bar Association can do much to mold public opinion in the na- tions of the world for peaceful settlement of international disputes. World public opinion for peace through law, under the leadership of lawyers, will have an impact on the conduct of the governments of civilized nations. Ideal- istic though it be, we lawyers should never shrink from pursuing the objective, nor should we be impatient with slow progress. That there is progress is cer- tain. That we can attain our objective requires deep faith and loyalty to the principle of the rule of law within and between the nations of the world. SYLVESTER C. SMITH, JR.
