                  a.  6ubjoct served irith the Marine Corps.as a machahio on jot aircraft
             in both North Carolina (probably Cherry Point MCAS) ani in the Voot
             Indies.  lie didn't care for service life becausa of the diuciplnerc,
             regimentation, etc.  After being dicharge1  in 1955 he remair.ed in the
             United states, doin3 nothing for about opn yari  lie atendud Farieigh
             Dickinson for one year (1950-57), but left after that time because he
             found it lesn than satisfactory or stioulating.' In 1957 he came to
             Europe and toured around the continent.  Airing the latter prt of 1957
             and in 1958, he nado two 3-month trips on visitor's vinas to the Soviet
             Union whore he lived with his uncle's family in )inek. Ihile there he
             did attend some classes at the University, but was not a rehiotoro-
             stulent. He  stated that he has neveral cousins there about his age.
             From 1956 until the present he has been. studyinT at the slavic Institute
             here, and intends to take his examination in blavio Studies in January
             1961. lie will take: hin exanination in English and Russian, because
             he lu.s not mastered Danish well onough to take it in Danish as norr.ally
             required, he has agreed verbally with the Institute's authoritios
             that should he receive his decree, he will not untertake to obtain a
             teaching position in Russian etudies in Denmzrk.
