-O 13764, 19 September 1958

1, Subject arrived with lavell from Frankfurt on ache ule and
contacted Fagg and Meppiel who arranged for a meeting withr iIYPA -of
 TZER/50)on 25 September and a meeting with(SYMPATHIaER/1 on
 26 September.

      2. MA6UING and Ly1 outlined their plans for the research
project which is mentioned in reference correspondence and which will
apparently be the subject of discussion in Headquarters when Mrs.
LASSGIG is in YWashington in the near future. The (YwATIzaR dis-
cussed in some detail the possibilities of acquiring information of
interest to them in the'(SYNC 0NY)project by using this research
project as a vehicle for making contacts with persons in(
whomthey have not been able to contact directly with any hope of.
success. Most of these individuals mentioned by the CYPATBdI xRaE)o/
are-some of the well-known subjects of(SYNCHiONY)cases presently
living in 'jalthough a few prominentfex-communists were added
to assist Mrs, MASSING in-getting the interviewing started in
        )if her project is approved.

     3. Fa g and M eppIe ade it clear that this project would
appear to them to be one which would have a scope bpyond that of
present (YZPATHIZER)interest and that although the (8T1ATHJiEajo/
would be pleased to capitalize upon it for what success it would
bring within the somewhat limited number of individuals to whom
it would give access, the whole project comprising interviewing
done in other countries as well aE as it appears to be
planned would have to be accepted by Washington as of interest to
Washingon in itself, Thus, although the project is of interest
to the (YimATHIL6 -tt could. t be sold on that basis alone,

     4o s/11 n S 50 pprecia e the opportunity which they have
had to speak to Krs. MASSING in person, although it is evident that
