As our world grows smaller, our needs to understand it grow larger. This is profoundly true as to the laws which govern inter- actions between nations, their peoples and their commerce. This reality is why choosing a career in i _ mational law makes more sense than ever. International law today is a term with bth a classical definition and a common one. \ That classical definition, encompassing what students study in an internationallaw classroom, is the law which regulates the inter- course of nations; the law of nations, that is, the customary law which determines the rights and regulates the intercourse of inde- pendent states in peace and war. As we recall from the first lec- ture in that classroom, it is the legal science which in its modern form began with the Dutch jurist Hugo Grotius' publication in 1625 of De Jure Belli et Pacis (the Law of War and Peace). That common one encompasses the components of legal prac- tice which regulate the movements of people arid their com- merce, particularly commodities and services, the funds which pay for them, and the rights and obligations which accompany them. While in the years following the Second World War this broader definition focused mostly on outbound commerce, to- day it focuses significantly on inbound commerce too. By whatever definition, international law today is where the ac- tion is in law practice, and it is going to be even more so in the future. / International law's alphabet soup to ay - GAT, NAFTA, APEC, CITES, NPT, ICSID, UNCLS, AND UNCCISG - will be suc- ceeded.
