Numbering of Claims.
(ODDER No. 3,023.)
U. S. PATENT OFFICE, Washington, Sept. 21, 1927.
In view of difficulties arising in the Government Print-
ing Office in the printing of specifications, the claims of
an application, when it Is passed to Issue, must, as to all
appearing In any one paper, be numbered in sequence.
If this is not possible with the claims as they appear
when the case is allowed, the rewriting of all, or as many
of them as may be necessary to comply with this rule,
will be required.

Adverse Decisions in Interference.
In Interferences involving the indicated claims of the
following patents final decisions have been rendered that
the respective patentees were not the first inventors with
respect to the claims listed:
Pat. 1,483,507, C. J. Brockbank, Refractory article and
method of making the same, decided July 21, 1927, claims
1 and 3.
Pat. 1,556,625, G. 0. Pomeroy, Pressing machine, de-
cided July 20, 1927, claim 1.
Pat. 1.582,898, J. Bobrow, Hinge and the hingedly con-
necting of temples to frames of spectacles, decided Au-
gust 27, 1927, claim 1.
Final decision in interference has been rendered against
the following trade mark:
T. M. 222,237, Field seeds and seed grains, Occidental
Seed Company. Registered December 28, 1926. Decided
August 11, 1927.
Drawings.
RULE 88.
38. When there are drawings, the description will refer
to the different views by figures and to the different parts
by letters or numerals, (preferably the latter.)
RULE 52-EXTRACT.
(t) The different views should be consecutively numbered.
Letters and figures of reference must be carefully
formed. They should, if possible, measure at least one-
eighth of an inch in height, so that they may bear re-
duction to one twenty-fourth of an Inch ; and they may
be much larger when there is sufficient room. They
must be so placed in the close and complex parts of
zlrawings as not to interfere with a thorough compre-
hension of the same, and therefore should rarely cross
or mingle with the lines. When necessarily grouped
around a certain part, they should be placed at a little
distance, where there Is available space, and connected
by short lines with the parts to which they refer and
by short broken lines when the number or letters reters
to parts shown in dotted lines. They should not be
placed upon shaded surfaces, and when It is difficult to
avoid this, a blank space must be left In the shading
where the letter occurs, so that it shall appear per-
fectly distinct and separate from the work. If the same
part of an invention appear In more than one view of
the drawing It must always be represented by the same
character, and the same character must never be used
to designate different parts.
It Is suggested that numerals or letters be used without
exponents.
