Notice-Assistant Examiner Examination,
The Civil Service Commission has announced an open
competitive examination for the position of Assistant Ex-
aminer In the Patent Office on February 13, 14, and 15,
1918. Qualified persons are urged to enter this exami-
nation. Entrance salary, $1,500 per annum.
Application blanks and information as to where the ex-
amination will be held may be obtained from        the Civil
Service Commission, Washington, D. C.
Amendment to Rules of Practice.

DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
Washington, D. 0., February 6, 1918.
Acting under the provisions of section 483 of the Re-
vised Statutes and with the approval of the Secretary of
the Interior, Rule 15 of the Rules of Practice in the Pat-
ent Office is amended by adding thereto the following:
except that authorized officers of the Army and Navy will
be allowed during the war to inspect cases which in the
opinion  of the Commissioner disclose inventions that
might be of value In the prosecution of the war, after
having filed a duly-executed oath with the Commissioner
that no contents of any application will be divulged except
as It may become necessary in the prosecution of the war.
so that the rule will read as follows :
15. Pending applications are preserved In secrecy. No
information will be given, without authority, respecting

the filing by any particular person of an application for a
patent or for the reissue of a patent, the pendency of any
particular case before the Office, or the subject-matter of
any particular application, unless it shall be necessary to
the proper conduct of business before the Office, as pro-
vided by Rules 97, 103, and 108, except that authorized
officers of the Army and Navy will be allowed during the
war to Inspect cases which in the opinion of the Commls-
sioner disclose inventions that might be of value in the
prosecution of the war, after having filed a duly-executed
oath with the Commissioner that no contents of any ap-
plication will be divulged except as it may become neces-
sary In the prosecution of the war.
